About My Water

Where Your Water Comes From

70% of your water comes from wells located throughout the Boise area, where it is treated on site to meet safe water drinking standards. The remaining water comes from the Boise River and is treated at either the Marden Water Treatment Plant or the Columbia Water Treatment Plant.

About the Treatment Process

There are several different treatment processes for the water in your area. Groundwater, drawn from underground wells, is treated with small amounts of chlorine to protect against potentially harmful microorganisms in the water. At 9 of the wells, we add low doses of polyphosphate to isolate iron and manganese and keep your water clear.  Surface water, drawn from the Boise River, is treated at two plants. The Marden Water Treatment Plant is a conventional filtration plant that filters out particulate matter and has an innovative upflow clarification process for pretreatment. The Columbia Water Treatment Plantis a membrane plant that uses microfiltration to remove particulate matter. Both processes are followed by adding chlorine to destroy harmful bacteria and using pH adjustment to reduce the water’s corrosivity. Finally, fluoride is added and optimized to promote oral health by strengthening tooth enamel..
