FIRE HYDRANT FLUSHING--FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Apr 24, 2017

WHY DOES SUEZ FLUSH FIRE HYDRANTS?

Periodically flushing water mains through fire hydrants is an important maintenance activity. Flushing removes harmless minerals and sediment that collect in the mains and helps to ensure high water quality. These operations also help us to be sure that hydrants are working properly.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FLUSH A HYDRANT?

As water leaves the hydrant, it stirs up and removes sediment that might have accumulated in the mains and hydrant. We also remove the chlorine from the water so that it is safe to release into storm drains which may lead to rivers and streams.

CAN YOU TELL ME EXACTLY WHEN CREWS WILL BE FLUSHING IN MY AREA?

It’s difficult to give you an exact time. Our schedule may change based on weather or other conditions.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT WHEN CREWS ARE FLUSHING IN MY AREA?

While hydrants are being flushed, customers may temporarily experience low water pressure or discolored water.

IS THE WATER SAFE TO DRINK?

Yes. Even though the water may be discolored, it is safe to drink. Compounds such as iron, manganese and other sediments make it discolored but they don't have health effects. Most people prefer to wait until the water is clear before they drink it.

CAN I DO LAUNDRY?

Sediment may cause rust-colored stains. Please run your cold water before you do your laundry. If it is discolored, wait for half an hour and try again. If you notice rust stains on your laundry, call us at 877-266-9101 in Westchester or 845-623-1500 X 2225 in Rockland.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY WATER IS DISCOLORED OR RUSTY?

Running several cold water taps at full force for several minutes will usually flush out sediment or discolored water. You can also run a cold water faucet in the basement. If the water is not clear, wait for half an hour and try again. If it doesn’t clear up in a few hours, please call SUEZ at 877-266-9101 in Westchester or 845-623-1500 X 2225 in Rockland.

WHY DOES THE VOLUME OF WATER IN MY FAUCET SEEM LOW?

Check the faucet screens for trapped debris. If you still have low pressure, call SUEZ at 877-266-9101 in Westchester or 845-623-1500 X2225  in Rockland.

DOESN’T FLUSHING WASTE WATER?

Although no one wants to waste water, flushing is necessary to maintain high water quality and to be sure that hydrants are in proper working order. It’s a standard practice in the water industry.

WHO CAN OPERATE A FIRE HYDRANT?

SUEZ personnel, their authorized contractors and firefighters are the only ones who should be operating a hydrant. If you see anyone else operating a fire hydrant, please call SUEZ at 877-266-9101 in Westchester or 845-623-1500 X 2225 in Rockland.  Unauthorized use may be theft of service. When people steal water, it can drive up your water bill and create health and safety issues.
